“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (NIV)
Why ‘Freshwaters’?
During the period that we were praying about the name for the Fellowship, Phil & Steph Jones (the first leaders of Freshwaters) were looking for a home. One of the houses they looked at was on the Freshwaters estate in Harlow. Although they did not buy this house, the name appeared to be such a good picture of all we intended to be as a Fellowship – fresh, lively, refreshing, and forever flowing with the love of God into the community of Harlow and beyond. During the same period the Lord had also begun to speak to us about the river of life described in Ezekiel 47 (see below). We felt it was the name the Lord had for us – so we became Freshwaters Christian Fellowship.
Foundation
Freshwaters Christian Fellowship was founded in 1992 as a small community of believers committed to loving and serving the Lord Jesus Christ, one another, and the people of Harlow.
In the Spirit and the Power of Elijah
In the early days of Freshwaters the Lord confirmed to us through 2 independent prophetic words, one given to Phil Jones and the other to Freshwaters, that we were founded to fulfil the calling expressed in Luke 1:17:
This verse in the New Testament comes from a quote taken from the very end of the Old Testament (Malachi 4:5-6):
“See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.” (NIV)
We continue to seek to work out this vision through who we are, what we say and what we do, as individuals and as a community of believers.
